Basement Remodel; Sinking Spring PA
2009 HBA 1st place Remodelers Showcase Category A

This basement had plenty of untapped potential. Large windows provided ample daylight and there was an existing fireplace.
There goal was to better utilize this space for the activities of their daily life and create a casual entertaining area that better reflected their taste.

The five main functions of this space were to be a television area, an internet station, a craft area, a display area and a causal entertaining space.
They requested the space to have a warm and comfortable contemporary feel

THE PLAN:

The 86” ceiling height was a concern for me. I wanted the room to have adequate storage and display cabinetry but had some trepidation that an abundance of cabinetry would close in the space. In order to add height to the space I designed 4” floating shelves for the wall space to serve as the display area and echo the clients’ sediment for a contemporary feel. Full height door base cabinets and a custom designed five drawer base (48” wide) were specified for the storage of crafts.

PROGRESS; Tear-out completed new drywall and flooring installed

The zero clearance gas insert and flat screen television would be the focal point of the design. They were seamlessly integrated into a floor to ceiling mantel.

BEFORE AFTER

We installed doors on the furniture side of the desk to provide access to a chase for the computer cords and the back of the computer tower.
Two closets were also constructed to provide additional utility storage. Carpet was removed from the stairs and they were fitted with wood treads and risers.

BEFORE AFTER

The 33” x 96” desk with a 36” wide file cabinet, pull out keyboard and base for the computer tower would also act as the craft area, a room divider and provided a place to anchor the furniture for viewing the television.

A 12” x 24” tile in a light color was installed in a staggered pattern to enhance the contemporary feel. This light colored tile, a darker wall color and a white ceiling assisted in creating a room that feels bigger than it is.
