Define Your Goal
First step in defining your goal is to write it down. Your goal can be summed up in a sentence or a page. The important thing is to define it so you can take steps to accomplish it and to provide a starting point for your design professional.Your goal can include specific objectives like remove a wall, add windows or add an island with a prep area or it can be generalized like; “ I want to create an informal gathering space that works for two cooks”. Just start writing down what comes to mind and soon you will have a clearer picture.
Map Out The Terrain.
Start making observations of how you now use the space you want to renovate. Write down your daily routine on paper. The best way to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t work is to get a clear picture of the functionality of the space. As you do this, be sure to note obstacles that now keep your family from having your needs met by your current kitchen or bath. Note how accessible important features are and how easily the family can move through the space. It is important to decide what you need to change the most so priorities can be set for the design process.
Gathering Ideas
Look through magazines and save photos of rooms, products and floor plans that catch your eye. Collect surface samples, fabric and wall coverings that appeal to you. Don’t limit yourself to what you think you can afford. Build an idea file and wish list of things that interest you. The file and list will help you create a context, a look and feel that best reflects your personal taste and will act as a stimulus and constant reference point for your plan. Additionally I recommend deciding early on what appliances you would like for a kitchen project. Don’t worry so much about what specific models or manufacture but focus on size, style and type. A kitchen will need to be designed around these items.
Budget
You’ve seen what you like. Now you are getting a sense of how things you like coincide with how you actually use the space. The next logical step is to look at what this will cost. Money is always an object, so this is a good time to determine how much you want to invest in your kitchen or bathroom. What is the total amount you are willing to spend and how much can or are you willing to borrow? Establishing your priorities early will help decide where to spend the money and help your designer create a space that will fit your budget.
